As a child, the Moomins freaked me out. I have no idea why, and have no intention of watching a replay to find out. What's interesting is... when I recently saw this display in a book store, it still sent shivers down my spine.
In training, people may well have similar reactions to certain situations:
This is often because of previous poor experiences: Incongruent set up and debrief, not seeing the intended benefit, or feeling embarrassed. Other times people really can't place their reactions at all... Moomins!! For new Trainers the key is to ensure we are not adding to people's negative beliefs. If people are not eagerly answering your questions, don't pick on them! Create an environment where they feel confident to interact. Or if you're running an activity, give different options for participation, such as observer, and be clear on the debrief. You don't have to delve deep into why it's an issue for them, just acknowledge it is, work out how to be flexible about it, and NEVER, EVER refer to Moomins!!
