Roadworks, Fast-food and Training

There are two things I’ve learnt to distrust;
  1. The ‘REDUCE SPEED - Roadworks’ signs on the motorway
  2. The content of drive-through fast-food orders

Both promise rewards;
  1. The reward of actually seeing...
  1. roadworks taking place as you limp along at 30 mph, for 6 miles, in the sweltering sunshine… on a bank holiday!
  2. The reward that you’ll actually find what you friggin ordered in the bag!

It only takes a few incidents to learn distrust.  And once you distrust something, you start second guessing,
  1. Driving a little faster, until you can actually see the roadworks!
  2. Refusing to move away from the kiosk until you’ve checked the content of the bag!

Distrust of training is also a ‘thing’.  Especially if someone has previously had a poor experience, or if their Manager is a grade A numpty, who simply told them to go.

So, how can we build trust back up?
Be consistently conscious that everyone of your learners comes with their own experience, and take this into account before judging their actions…

PLUS, they may have been driving to your training session, through 30 mph non-existent roadworks, for 6 miles, while chewing on a soggy bagel instead of a yummy breakfast muffin!
