Recently I noticed an Apple Map van surveying the neighbourhood for their improved Apple Mapping service. The first thing that crossed my mind… 'Thank goodness I sorted the garden out!' Just a few days before, there had been 5-foot weeds sprouting out the lavender patch and more dead rose-heads than live ones. But as the van scanned our house to take this snap-shot in time, I gave an internal 'Hurrah!' that it had captured the house on a 'good day'.
What’s Apple maps got to do with Training and Development? In the changing world of L&D, it’s good to remember that these 'drive by snap-shots' don’t just take place when running official learning activities with an engaged audience. (Glorious Garden scenario!) But they also take place when you're knee deep in a discussion about your exploits over the weekend or having a pity party about how much work you have! (Weeds in the Lavender patch!) It’s also well recognised that being involved in training activities in your current company is one of the best ways to start your career in L&D. However, this means every interaction with managers, peers and random people you pass in the hallway are potential snap-shots that will leave a lasting impression with people that could influence your future L&D career. Being an L&D Professional means being a role model, and if you’re not perceived as one in your current position, why would someone think you could be one in a future position? So, whether it’s doing a spot of weeding to make things a little more presentable or making fundamental changes to promote your best side to a wider audience, be prepared for the Apple Map van in all areas of your career! If you are looking to get into Training & Development and want to make a great impression, then I have just the thing for you… a 5-DAY CHALLENGE on ‘How to Gain Training Experience… Without Being a Trainer.’ CLICK HERE TO ACCESS Comments are closed.
